Warning: This Post Contains All Kinds of Musical Gushings

I actually have very existential thoughts going on in my head but I might come back later tonight to lay them out on paper. Exorcism of a sort.

For now, something more fun....
Per my fellow blogger Kiddo's instructions: List ten songs that you are currently digging. It doesn't matter what genre they are from, whether they have words, or even if they're no good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying right now. Post these instructions, the artists, and the ten songs in your blog.

Only 10 is difficult. Basically, most of these songs are from artists whose albums are constantly spinning in my CD player these days.

1- Keane- Everybody's Changing
2- Liz Phair- Red Light Fever
3- Gwen Stefani- Hollerback Girl
4- Beck- Qué Onda Guero
5- Jackson 5- I Want You Back
6- Fountains of Wayne- Mexican Wine
7- Melissa Etheridge- Come To My Window
8- Coral Egan- State of Grace
9- Sarah McLachlan- Fallen
10- Diana Krall- The Look of Love

I've also recently rediscovered my CD by the Dino Martinis, a swing/jazz band that never fails to put me in a good mood. Oh, and I want to get the new double, live-in-concert Carole King CD.

Talking music always improves my mood. :)

It always improves mine as well. I think we should start a long music discussion.

We talk a lot about books we've heard of but haven't read. It's funny how music being what it the same can't be said. Or can it? Is there an artist that you have never listened too, or know little about that perhaps you should give a chance to?

I think it's easier to dismiss music because you can more easily sample it, and decide it's not for you. Then again, sometimes you misjudge an artist, and just heard one of their suckier songs. Alternatively, musicians also evolve so one of their periods might appeal to us but not their whole "oeuvre".

As I got older, I especially discovered old school musicians like Dolly Parton, Carole King, Aretha Franklin,... that I didn't necessarily think I would enjoy but I do. Dolly Parton is especially particularly misjudged because of her country roots & the big boobs/sparkly dresses/big hair combo. LOL I am not necessarily a fan of country; something about it grates my nerves. A lot of it is very much at odds with my reality. But Dolly Parton, for example, wrote wonderful songs. So has Patsy Cline. I bought an album of Dolly Parton's songs covered by a slew of comtemporary women singers (Nora Jones, Alison Krauss, Sinead O'Connor, Shania Twain,...) and it was one of the best albums ever. I certainly should look a bit more into that old school women of country.

I have also gotten interested in punk; well the original punk like The Clash. I'm a diverse girl. LOL I haven't been able to decide which album by The Clash I should get. I have heard reviews that said "London Calling" is their best albums but I've also heard it might be tough for beginners to listen to at first.

I've also gotten interested in Tom Waits but I can't decide if his voice bugs me too much.

As much as I like a lot of the contemporary music, a lot of it tends to be very repetitive, and just a spin-off of better older artists. I do have an aversion to rap and hip-hop; well, mostly the violent and misogynistic lyrics that goes with the decent music.

What about you?

By the way, yesterday, I heard a cover of "Everlasting Love" by U2 that I gotta find.

I've heard that U2 cover, yes.

Now, I generally cringe at the notion of the country genre in general as well, but I was going to say if I had to name someone I misjudged or whathaveyou, it would be Lyle Lovett. You have me feeling the lurve for Dolly now.

I have to say a big *thud* at The Clash. You go girl. In fact, very interesting- I heard a clip on NPR about a re-release of Joe Strummer's first band pre-clash. You then must check out the Ramones. :)

I was wondering if you've listen to much by Amie Mann, I heard her new one on the way home from work. Much melancholia- but you dig Sarah Mclaughlin so... LOL

I feel there is a whole bunch of alternative rock that I missed from 2000 - present that I might need to look into more.

Can I add that I am most sick of Coldplay right now? I might be biased but...

I'm pretty tired of Coldplay myself. I liked their first 2 albums. I even went to see them in concert in 2003. They were awesome. But I tried to listen to their most recent album, and it was pretty blah. Just doesn't do it for me.

Re: Aimee Mann. I like her voice but I should probably give her more of a chance. I heard some of her songs that left me a bit cold. Just like Ani DiFranco. That is weird since I tend to dig angsty female singer-songwriters. LOL I should try to find something of hers? Any recs?

Recent alt rock? I'm not sure what fits in that category exactly but I have a few suggestions of good recent bands, although I don't necessarily know if they are all rock.

1) Fountains of Wayne is awesome. "Welcome Interstate Managers" is just one of my fave albums ever.

2)I actually like Simple Plan as well. I'm certainly older than their average fan (LOL) but I enjoyed their album "No Pads, No Helmets...Just Balls." It's funny because one of my best friends went to high school with them. Who knew they were little French-speaking Montreal boys?

3) My brother loves the up-and-coming band Arcade Fire; their current single is Rebellion (Lies). It's been very popular up here. The album left me very indifferent even though I seem to be the only one. It goes very much in the line of bands like Keane, The Killers, although they are a bunch of Montrealers (yet again!).

4) The Ataris. I mean, their cover of "Boys of Summer" was good but their whole album is awesome. I love that album too.

5) David Gray. Okay, so that's not rock at all but did you ever listen to the album "White Ladder"? Mmmm, tasty music.

My kids luuurve Simple Plan- Bwahahahaa!

The Killers- eh. Cool licks, but every song sounds the same. BTW, little J has announced that Mr.Brightside is what he will sing for his AI audition. ROFL! I can let this slide, as the child also takes much pride in announcing whenever U2 is on the radio. :)

As For Aimee Mann, there are just certain songs by her that touch me. She did the bulk of the Magnolia soundtrack, and I heard one song on my way home last night- "Save Me" that just made me think of her as a rec... Other ones I like are "Humpty Dumpty" "I Should Have Known"... hmmm.

I don't like The Killers either. I'm not getting what the buzz about them is at all. I much prefer Keane, much more melodic.

Lots of people seem to hate Maroon 5... I just think they make good pop music.

In the same sphere as Simple Plan, I kind of enjoy the recent songs released by Green Day.
